Staff Report
Punjab da puttar Dharmendra, the beloved veteran Bollywood actor, will be in Toronto next week in his role as brand ambassador of the inaugural Punjabi International Film Academy Awards (Pifaa), being held across the GTA later this summer.
Dharmendra was conferred with the Padma Bhushan award by President Pratibha Patil in New Delhi as recently as on April 4.
Speaking with Rajinder Saini, CEO of Parvasi Media Group, Dharmendra said he was very happy that India has bestowed this honour on him.
He said he is a very simple man from a down-to-earth family and although he deeply misses his parents on occasions such as this, he is excited to share his joy with all Punjabis across the world.
Dharmendra will be in Toronto Tuesday, April 10, to kick off the Pifaa awards around the festive occasion of Baisakhi. Pifaa tickets will go on sale during the same time.
The true blue Punjab da puttar believes that no matter where a Punjabi lives in the world, he will always carry Punjab in his heart. “I live in Maharashtra but my heart is Punjabi,” he told Saini in his interview.
As Pifaa’s brand ambassador, Dharmendra requested all Punjabis in Canada from India and Pakistan to “take pride in the first-ever Punjabi International Film Academy Awards (August 3-6, 2012) and make it a successful event.”
Dharmendra will be accompanied by other high-profile film personalities such as well-known actor Om Puri, music director Jaidev Kumar, film director Navniat Singh, and popular Punjabi actress Neeru Bajwa.
