Last year’s Punjabi smash hit Jihne Mera Dil Luteya swept the inaugural Punjabi International Film Academy Awards at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre over the weekend.
The movie won most of the big awards of the night, including Best Film (Public Choice); Best Director, won by Mandeep Kumar; Best Actor – Male, won jointly by Diljit Dosanjh and Gippy Grewal; Best Actor – Female, won by home-grown talent Neeru Bajwa; as well as Best Cinematography, Screenplay, and Dialogue.
Film Legend Dara Singh was posthumously presented the Lifetime Achievement Award.
An appreciative crowd of around 2,500 were kept entertained by the antics of show hosts Sonu Sood and funnyman Kapil Sharma — with the twosome giving way to Gurpreet Ghuggi and Divya Dutta, who took the event to its climax in the wee hours.
Led by Brand Ambassador Dharmendra and Bollywood veteran Om Puri, several top actors attended the event, including Prem Chopra and Rama Vij.
Several events ran alongside, including a meet-the-stars at popular restaurant Tandoori Flame; a screening of Carry on Jatta at Albion Cinema in Etobicoke; and Teri Amrita, performed at Brampton’s Rose Theatre.
Primary promoter Rajinder Saini admitted the event faltered in the lead-up, but in the best show-must-go-on tradition was buttressed by support from prominent community members Vasu Chanchlani and Harpreet Sethi; visit www.pifaawards.com
