Mosaic kicks off in style
The popular South Asian festival Mosaic got started with a bang last night with a slew of events, including a fashion show.
The free festival, which continues through Sunday at Celebration Square, started in style with a fashion show featuring a number of notable Mississauga women strutting the catwalk showing off the latest South Asian designs.
Models included City of Mississauga Ward 5 Councillor Bonnie Crombie, Mississauga Arts Council executive director Linda Thomas and television personality Indra Naidoo Harris.
However, that wasn’t all. There were screenings of selections from the Mosaic International South Asian Film Festival as well as a poetry reading. Those in attendance took advantage of the food vendors, midway rides and shopping booths.
Asma Mahmood co-founded the annual multi-disciplinary event with her husband, Arshad, and they expect a turnout of 70,000 visitors this weekend.
Mosaic continues tonight with an official opening reception at 7 p.m.
There will also be more film screenings, a youth arts and crafts sale plus performances by bands as part of Rock The Coliseum. As well, there will be apresentation of Sikh martial arts and a performance by jazz and blues band Red Baraat.
