Four Oakville school grads receive Oscar nominations

Two alumni from Sheridan College’s Bachelor of Animation program in Oakville earned Oscar nods on Tuesday (Jan. 24)
Trevor Jimenez, who graduated from the program in 2007, and 2011 program graduate Domee Shi were both nominated in the Best Animated Short Film Category.
As well, Sheridan media arts alumnus Craig Henighan (1995) received a nomination by the 91st Academy Awards for Sound Mixing.
The Oscars recognize excellence in cinematic achievements. The winners will be announced at a special ceremony on Feb. 24, 2023.
Both Jimenez and Shi were nominated in their directional debuts.
“To see our alumni recognized in this significant way speaks to their skills as storytellers as well as animators,” says Janet Morrison, President and Vice Chancellor of Sheridan.
“We are thrilled to celebrate their successes, made all the more notable as Sheridan celebrates the 50th anniversary of its Animation Program.”
Jimenez is nominated for his work in the animated short Weekends. The short tells the story of a young boy who shuffles between the homes of his divorced parents.
Shi, also a Pixar storyboard artist, received his nomination for his work in Bao. Screened ahead of Incredibles 2 in theatres, the short film tells the story of an aging Chinese-Canadian mother who receives an unexpected second chance at motherhood when a dumpling comes to life.
“The faculty at Sheridan are honoured to have the opportunity to nurture the talent of budding animators,” said Angela Stukator, Associate Dean of Animation and Game Design at the school.
“Domee and Trevor’s success is a testament to the heights Sheridan’s Animation students can reach. We are deeply proud of them, and all our alumni who contributed to films nominated this year.”
Henighan is part of the team that worked on Roma, nominated in the Best Sound Mixing category.
The Sheridan grad has worked on other award-winning productions, including Black Swan, 13th and Hidden Figures.
He has also has won a pair of Emmys for his work on the hit Netflix series Stranger Things.
Sheridan Animation alumni Michael Fukushima (’85) has also been nominated for Best Animated Short Film for his production of Animal Behaviour.
In all, four of the five projects nominated for Best Animation Feature were done by Sheridan Animation alumni.
Those features include Incredibles 2, Isle of Dogs, Ralph Breaks the Internet and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse.
